P-H-M’s FIRST® LEGO® League is sponsored by Penn Robotics, Team 135. Penn’s team was a 2015 Indiana District-Kokomo City winner of the FIRST® Robotics Competition; Penn’s team also won the Chairman’s award. FIRST® LEGO® League is a national program that introduces younger students to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface. This year’s challenge will be Trash Trek: discovering the hidden world of garbage!

In FLL, elementary and middle-school students (ages 9-14) get to:

• Design, build, test and program robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology

• Apply real-world math and science concepts

• Research challenges facing today’s scientists

• Learn critical thinking, team-building and presentation skills

• Participate in tournaments and celebrations

What FLL teams accomplish is nothing short of amazing. It’s fun. It’s exciting.  And participants learn skills that will last a lifetime.

The first day of school is Wednesday, Aug. 19 and that means along with school supplies, parents also need to make sure their children are up-to-date on their immunizations.

A record of your child’s immunizations are due to your student’s health office on or by the first day of school. All P-H-M schools are open to the public beginning Wednesday, Aug. 5 (7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.). You can drop off the records at the schools between Aug. 5 and Aug. 19.

For incoming Kindergarten students:

• 3 Hep B
• 5 DTaP (4 doses are acceptable if the fourth dose was administered on or after the 4th birthday)
• 4 Polio (the 3^rd dose must be given on or after the 4^th birthday and at least 6 months after the previous dose with only one type of vaccine used, all OPV or all IPV. Final 4^th dose must be given on or after the 4^th birthday and administered at least 6 months after the previous dose).
• 2 MMR
• 2  Varicella
• 2 Hep A

Additional immunizations needed for incoming 6^th grade students:

• 1 Tdap (Tetanus & Pertussis)
• 1^st dose of MCV4 (Meningococcal conjugate)
   

Additional immunizations needed for incoming 12^th grade students:

• 2^nd dose of MCV4 (Meningococcal conjugate)

Immunizations may be obtained from your family doctor, St. Joseph County Health Department, or other area clinics. Please call the school health office for resources.

• Our elementary schools are hosting many fun Back to School family events starting the week of August 10th. Be on the lookout from communication directly from your school principal. 
• All three Middle Schools are also planning a Walk-Around on Thursday, August 13^th. Be on the lookout from communication directly from your school principal. Make sure you mark your calendar and plan to attend!
• Penn is hosting a “Walk Around” to help parents and students get familiar with the school:
  • Penn High School’s “WALK AROUND” on Saturday, August 15, from 9 a.m. – Noon gives students a chance to familiarize themselves with the school and find where their classes and activities are located.

SCHOOL CALENDARS

• Here is the SY 2026-27 one-page calendar showing “at a glance” the start and end dates, as well as scheduled recess and vacation dates.

  All P-H-M families are mailed the P-H-M District Activities Calendar early August. It lists key school and district events throughout the year. Click here to access a PDF version.
• Our online (Google) calendars are the most up-to-date. You’ll find a link to the P-H-M Corporate Calendar posted on the home page of the District website. It’s a Google calendar that can be added to your personal calendar.
• Each school also maintains an online Google calendar on the home page of each school website that is updated frequently with the school’s scheduled activities and event details. This is also visible in your school’s ParentSquare portal.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

• All P-H-M schools provide basic school supplies to our students, free of charge. Therefore, our schools do not issue supply lists. You will need to purchase a backpack, water bottle, lunch box, and other items you want your child to have at home or take with them to school. If other specific items need to be purchased for a class or lab, your child’s teacher will inform you after school starts.  

IMMUNIZATIONS AND HEALTHCARE SERVICES

TRANSPORTATION

• NEW FOR THE 2026-27 SY, P-H-M will be using Tyler Technologies, My Ride K-12 to provide real time GPS bus location so parents know when to send their students out to the bus stop.

CELL PHONE POLICY

• Beginning with the 2026-27 School Year, Indiana Senate Enrolled Act 78 (SEA 78) requires that personal wireless communication devices are powered off and not accessible to students during the school day.

Madison School encourages students to be at school every day possible. We ask parents to call our office with an explanation for their child's absence by no later than 8:30 A.M. on the day of the absence. The Attendance Hotline number is 633-4531 option 2.  Please be sure to state student name, date, and the reason for the absence. A drawing is also held for a $10.00 gift certificate per grade level each nine-week grading period. A $25.00 gift certificate awarded to each student earning the N.E.A.T. (Never Ever Absent or Tardy) recognition for the school year. A grand prize drawing will be held on the last day of school each year for students with perfect attendance for all four grading periods. On Thursday, May 7, Principal Aaron Leniski shared with his staff his decision to accept the job of Director of Athletics and Student Activities at Penn High School. Mr. Leniski informed parents of his decision in a letter dated May 8. (Here is a copy of that letter.) It was not an easy decision to make, as he has truly loved his years at Madison and grown close to that community. The students, staff and parents that make up Madison Elementary School are kind, generous, welcoming, engaged and supportive. It's those very attributes that will make the transition for incoming principal Ryan Towner all the easier. 

At Madison Fall is for Families. The beginning of the school year marks a change in family life as we welcome a new school year, new schedules, new teachers, new relationships, and a new principal.
