Riding for Riley
Making a Difference in the Lives of Others
Madison Students along with family members brought their bikes, scooters and walking shoes to Madison by 9 am on a Saturday, October 1, 2016.
Why get up and around so early on Saturday? To make a difference in the lives of children being treated at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis.
This year we are thankful we gathered $6,300.00 through pledges and donations to send to Riley. What a privilege Madison Students (and their families) have to give to energy and money to this organization. We like to think of it as Kids Caring for Kids.

Art Smart – Creativity in the Fall Season
Madison students used their Art Smart moments to create fine fall works of art now on display in the student gallery.
- Kindergarten friends created a pumpkin patch utilizing the printmaking skills of Albrecht Durer.
- Grade one students explored Georges-Pierre Seurat’s concept of pointillism to create solid space of color, fall leaves, using dots of two or more colors in an area.
- Super second graders worked magic with magazine photos and clippings to create their own masterpiece using the Romare Bearden concept of collage. Collage seems easy; placing and arranging layers of paper, paint and subjects on a piece of paper, but it can be a hard concept to grasp. They did a super job.
- Friends in grade three focused on a fall leaf project following techniques from Andy Warhol who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art.
- Pablo Picasso was one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century, as well as the co-creator of Cubism. Students in grade four enjoyed this abstract style when creating witches.
- Our fifth graders learned some fabulous 3D drawing tips to make their pumpkins projects jump off the page.
Principal picks for this month are:
Zion Reed – Kindergarten
Lyla Frick – Grade One
Allison Schmidt – Grade Two
Nora Radar – Grade Three
Delia Heet – Grade Four
Kandice Ernspberger – Grade Five

Fire Prevention Day at Madison
Students always look forward to their day of fire prevention activities with the Madison Township Fire Department. To top of the day’s activities, we also had the PHM Ed. Foundation’s Fire Safety Course. The course consisted of climbing ladders, attaching hoses to fire hydrants, using ropes and pulleys to lift a bundle of rope, crawling through a dark area, and escaping through doors and windows. We have no doubt that the students’ experience today will have them more prepared to escape in an emergency! We thank the MTFD for their time today in teaching our students about fire prevention and safety!
Towner Talk – Madison Owl Prowl
Deep in the Woods…an Owl Prowl
Would an owl be found, deep in the Madison woods? No one knew for sure, but all would agree that the Madison Owl Prowl was a fantastic evening. As has become tradition, the weather wasn’t entirely friendly – but the atmosphere sure was. Over 150 students, parents, and staff came together for a picnic by the pavilion, and a walk in the woods. Mrs. Dance and Mrs. Hostetler again showed their excellence at serving hot dogs to students and parents…it was a picnic meal fit for a Panther.
As darkness approached, Mr. Glassman, nature and animal expert, led the gathering through the Madison Nature Center (via the newly rejuvenated nature trails!). As the group silently walked the trails through the woods, Mr. Glassman let out several owl calls, hoping to bring one in to be seen and heard by the Madison crowd. To our amazement… the barred owl answered the call and talked back to defend his territory.
Thank you to everyone who attended this fabulous event. We look forward to seeing you all again at next year’s Madison Owl Prowl.

Elementary Visual Arts Academy nominated for state honor

The curriculum is so intentional, and the writing-art
connection is outstanding. We are thankful for your
passion to do this!”
Engaging, enriching—words that describe the 2016 Visual Arts Academy.
Excited, enthralled—the reaction of so many of the children experiencing this unique summer program.
Now in its fourth year, over 800 children in grades K-5 are taking part in the 2016 Visual Arts Academy.
The Visual Arts Academy has been nominated to receive the designation of “Promising Practice.” That distinction is granted by the Indiana Department of Education to programs that use innovative approaches to deliver educational benefits. Once “Promising Practices” are identified, other Indiana districts may choose to initiate similar programs for the families they serve.
The Visual Arts Academy represents an innovative partnership developed by Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation and the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame. The Academy features art making and writing through the examination of original works of art from both the Snite Museum and museums around the world.

that I am an artist?”
It is comprised of six one-week programs, running from June 6 through July 15, 2016. Each week students from a different grade level experience a diversely rich curriculum that focuses upon the creation of an identity as an artist with words as well as images.
Each day students work with the visiting artists and art teachers in art making, elementary writing teachers for writing workshop and visual thinking strategies, multi-media experience to learn about art mediums such as glass blowing or architecture. Students also spend one day at the Snite Museum.
Since its inception, the vision and mission of the Visual Arts Academy has been shared by a core group of teachers and administrators at P-H-M and Notre Dame. Under the leadership of Assistant Superintendent Dr. Kay Antonelli, the group created the curricula “from the ground up” and provided the professional development for all teachers who participate during the Academy. Over 25 elementary writing and secondary art teachers are serving the Academy this summer.
Thanks to the financial support of these contributors, the Visual Arts Academy is provided for all children free of charge.

Coming Soon: New CANVAS dashboard for parent and student users
CANVAS is an online communication platform that connects students, parents and teachers. CANVAS has boosted the success of P-H-M’s Chromebook program in middle and high school, and most of our users have given it a “thumbs up” this year.
Starting June 6, 2016, P-H-M’s CANVAS users will see a new and improved “dashboard” when they log on. In addition to the new look, the user will have new options for organizing and viewing CANVAS content. We think the changes being made to the user interface will merit two thumbs up!
Parents and students, watch the video below for an overview of the changes.
The URL (web address ) to CANVAS is not changing. You will find it at the same location, or by using the same link or shortcut, as you have used in the past.
- Click here to go to the CANVAS login page now, or copy/paste this address into your browser bar: https://phm.instructure.com/ to go there.
